Rourke Bridge

Urban Idea Lab is serving as bridge architects and urban designers on a multi-disciplinary team for the replacement of the Rourke Bridge in Lowell, Massachusetts. The existing bridge was built in 1983 as a temporary structure and, carrying about 27,000 vehicles per day, is an essential transportation link over the Merrimack River for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Additionally, the Merrimack River is one of the country’s premier rowing venues and the team is working to design the bridge deck and piers to enhance the experience for both racers and spectators. In addition to those bridge architecture services, UIL is developing overlooks of the river to take advantage of the many active river uses as well as the natural scenery along its edges.
