Etty Padmodipoetro is the bridge architect for this project, working as a subconsultant to AECOM, to investigate alternative designs for this deteriorating bridge on the Fort Point Channel. Restoring the existing bridge is one option being considered, but also included are designs for new bridges that use the existing bridge as inspiration and bridges that are unique designs responding to the surrounding context. The new bridge will reconnect the Downtown with the Seaport for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and potentially transit vehicles. The new bridge will also restore the HarborWalk connection that was broken when the bridge was closed to pedestrian traffic in 2014.
All of the alternatives are raised, fixed-span bridges to accommodate future sea-level rise and maintain the existing navigation channel. Ms. Padmodipoetro is working closely with an advisory committee representing numerous stakeholders, and with the Climate Change and Environmental Planning team at the Boston Planning and Development Agency to ensure the bridge alternatives support the City’s climate resiliency vision.
